Euclidean Matrix
Build polyrhythms from simple numbers.

Set the steps and pulses of each lane, and Euclidean Matrix spreads the hits as evenly as possible, using the Bjorklund algorithm. Stack lanes of different lengths into a polyrhythm, listen to it, and send it to the MIDIGEN studio. It runs in your browser.

Euclidean Matrix showing concentric rings of steps with a rotating playhead

How it works

From your input to editable MIDI.

Start from a presetPick a polyrhythm preset, or build from scratch. The rings show every lane at once, with a playhead going round.
Shape each laneLanes cover kick, snare, closed hat, open hat, percussion, bass and lead. Set steps, pulses and rotation for each, mute any of them, and set the root key, a scale and the tempo.
Audition and open in the studioListen to the whole matrix, then open it as tracks in the piano roll and export the MIDI file.

Good to know

  • Steps are the length of the cycle and pulses are the hits placed in it. Rotate shifts the pattern.
  • Lanes with different step counts drift against each other, which is what makes the polyrhythm.
  • Bass and lead lanes are fitted to the key and scale you choose.
  • The patterns are generated by rules, not from your audio.
